Vitamin supplements

Vitamin supplements are dietary supplements that people take as an addition to their staple diet for some added advantage or health benefits. In the present socio-economic scenario they play a great role in people’s diet regime to help them lead a fit and healthy life.

Need for supplements

The human body needs a balance of nutrition; carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to stay healthy and fit, fight against diseases and get energy. These elements can be found in food and consumed via the meals we eat every day. A person must consume grains, vegetables, fruits; milk, meat and beans everyday for a balanced diet. Most of us lead a very hectic and stressed lifestyle today. We get little time to relax, exercise or eat a full course meal three times a day. Such lifestyle encourages dependence on fast food or readymade and processed food. Imbalanced diets lead to obesity, vitamin and mineral deficiency and may hamper our health. As a solution to that people are now resorting to Vitamin supplements to support their lifestyle.

Benefits of Vitamin supplements

Though there are no such proven facts on the benefits of Vitamin supplements, it has been widely accepted that since our daily diet lacks many of the nutritional elements that we need to stay healthy, a supplement can always help us compensating for them. Some of the Vitamins are antioxidants that are claimed to be protecting against diseases like cancer and heart disease by eliminating the free radicals that damage and kill off cells. Antioxidants are also marketed as anti-aging products because they are thought to slow down the aging process. So, people pop supplements for overall health protection. Some of the important vitamins which can be found in natural food and in the form of supplements are: Vitamin A, Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, D and vitamin K. Vitamin A and Beta carotene, E and C are also considered as antioxidants.

Vitamin A Benefits

Vitamin A Benefits include overall health of the eyes, the skin, bone and the mucous membranes. Vitamin A and Beta carotene are exceptional antioxidants, responsible for neutralizing the free radicals inside the body that trigger harm to cells and tissue. Studies have claimed that beta carotene and Vitamin A can protect against Coronary Artery Illness or CAD. Vitamin A benefits also include protection from diseases caused by viruses. But still beta carotene or Vitamin A supplements have not been recommended normally. It is a fat soluble vitamin which is stored inside the fat tissue in the body. If you ingest a fat soluble vitamin in large dose, it can be stored in the wrong location such as your liver, which can trigger troubles in your body. Best absorbed together with little oil or fat in our diet, vitamin A supplement should be taken best in “natural fish oil” forms. One must keep in mind that the intake of vitamin A should not exceed the recommended dose or it might have rebound effect.

The vitamin B-complex

The vitamin B-complex refers to all of the known essential water-soluble vitamins except for Vitamin C and it includes folic acid too. Each member of the B-complex has a unique structure and performs unique functions in the human body. This is the most common vitamin taken as supplements. It is a must for a pregnant woman to take folic acid supplements for healthy growth of red blood cells. Other than that vitamin B complex is recommended when antibiotics are prescribed and for recovery after illness. The unabsorbed portion of the supplement always goes out of the body with urine.

Vitamin C benefits

Vitamin C benefits may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling. With so many benefits in its kitty, Vitamin C turns out to be a wonder nutrient. Vitamin C can be obtained by eating citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines and grapefruit), as well as papayas, guavas, strawberries and pineapple. And you should eat liberal portions of vegetables such as leafy greens like spinach, cabbage and kale, tomatoes, broccoli etc. But you’d need several servings and it can be lost during preparation, cooking or storage. To get the recommended dose, you must take a Vitamin C supplement.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that is beneficial for the overall health of our cells. Certain recent studies claim that vitamin E can lower the risk of deaths from heart disease. It has also been associated with healthy skin and anti-aging.

Bottom Line

If you’re generally healthy and eat a healthy and balanced diet, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, low-fat dairy products, lean meats and fish, you might not need any supplements. But, in normal case, people do not follow such well-balanced diets for which supplements are required. But, Vitamin supplements aren’t intended to be a food substitute because they can’t replicate all of the nutrients and benefits of whole foods. Depending on your situation and your eating habits, Vitamin supplements may not be worth the cost. However, your doctor or dietician can be the best person to tell you whether you require vitamin supplements or not.
